Our Pastor is the Revd. Joseph E. Summerville III. A native of La Marque, Texas, Pastor Joe graduated from
Stephen F. Austin State University and the
Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary . While at LTSS, he met his wife, Donna, herself a graduate of LTSS. After their marriage at the seminary chapel in 1993, they served an internship year at First Lutheran Church in Galveston. Pastor Joe was ordained in 1995, and has served parishes in Virginia and in South Texas, as well as a brief term as a teacher in a Roman Catholic parochial school in Houston. He also serves as Dean of the Coastal Ministerium, and as Chairperson of the Synod's Cabinet of Deans. Donna is a teacher who has taught in Lutheran and Episcopal schools, and is now teaching middle school language arts in a Roman Catholic school. They have one son, Brendan, who is an amazing kid, and five "adopted" German students, Malvin Zimmermann, who after living with the Summervilles for five years and graduating from university, returned to his hometown of
Trebur, Germany, and Julia Theato, a native of
Stephanskirchen, Bavaria, who spent the 2006-2007 year with them, and now lives with them and goes to college in the U.S. In 2007-2008, Philipp Zuther, from Lutterstorf, Germany lived with them, and in 2008-2009, they hosted Niklas Hoppe from
Solingen. In 2009-2010, we are welcoming Johannes Bischoff from
Lübeck, Germany. Although some of the "kids" are in Europe, they are still part of the Summerville family. To add to the fun are Oswald and Oliver, the cats, and Cosmo the schnauzer puppy. Pastor Summerville is an avid reader who likes mystery novels with a religious theme, as well as historically based novels. He is an accomplished cook and loves Food Network! He is fluent in French and some conversational and liturgical Spanish. His next goal is to learn to speak German.
